TLDR High testosterone levels in 20% of the women studied may indicate PCOS, while 80% had low levels with potential health impacts.
The study aimed to investigate the health effects of testosterone imbalance in women, particularly in relation to reproduction insufficiency. It involved 186 women from Eket Community in Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria. Blood samples were collected and analyzed using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay technique to measure testosterone levels and sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG). The results indicated that 38 women (20%) had testosterone levels above the reference range of 4.42-32.02 ng/ml/mmol/L, suggesting that these women might have polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), which can lead to irregular or absent menstrual periods, infertility, blood sugar disorders, and symptoms like acne and excess hair growth. Conversely, 148 women (80%) had low testosterone levels, which could also have significant health implications.
