TLDR Neuropeptides affect hair growth and could be used to control it.
The study investigated the role of sensory neuropeptides in hair follicle biology using C57BL/6 mice. It focused on the distribution and hair-cycle-dependent changes of nerve fibers marked by calcitonin-gene-related peptide, substance P, and peptide histidine methionine. These neuropeptides showed distinct patterns and significant changes during the hair cycle, particularly increasing during anagen. Substance P was found to accelerate anagen progression, while calcitonin-gene-related peptide and a substance-P-inhibitory peptide inhibited it. The study suggested that these neuropeptides have different roles in hair growth control, proposing the potential use of neuropeptide receptor agonists and antagonists for therapeutic hair growth manipulation.
