TLDR EGF and TGF-α help maintain hair cell cultures, but TGF-β1 stops their growth.
The study investigated the effects of calcium concentration, epidermal growth factor (EGF), and transforming growth factors (TGF) α and β1 on cultured hair follicle cells from the human scalp. The researchers found that a calcium concentration of 0.1 mM supported good cell proliferation. While EGF and TGF-α did not promote cell proliferation, they were beneficial for extending the number of passages and maintaining long-term cultures. In contrast, TGF-β1 inhibited the proliferation of cultured hair follicle cells.
