Efficacy of Platelet-Rich Plasma Injection for the Treatment of Male Androgenetic Alopecia: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Changes in Hair Density
January 2022
TLDR Platelet-rich plasma injections effectively increase hair density in men suffering from common hair loss.
The systematic review and meta-analysis conducted by Elin Herlina et al. investigated the efficacy of platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injections in treating male androgenetic alopecia (AGA), a common form of hair loss in men. The study included eight randomized controlled trials (RCTs) in the qualitative synthesis, and seven of these were included in the meta-analysis. The results showed that PRP treatment significantly improved hair density in male patients with AGA, with an overall standardized mean difference (SMD) in hair density of -0.889 (95% CI: -1.630 – -0.147, p<0.05) in favor of PRP treatment over placebo treatments. The study concluded that PRP injections are effective in improving hair density and could be considered as an additional treatment to improve outcomes in male AGA.
