TLDR Oral tranexamic acid is a safe and effective treatment for melasma.
The study evaluated the efficacy and safety of oral tranexamic acid (TA) for treating melasma in 40 female patients aged 27-50 years over 3 months. Patients took 250 mg of TA twice daily, resulting in significant improvement in melasma, with 47.5% experiencing an excellent response, 30% a very good response, and 22.5% a good response. Dermoscopic evaluation indicated reduced pigmentation and erythema in 67.5% of patients. The study concluded that oral TA is a safe and effective treatment for melasma, with no risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, thrombotic, or bleeding tendencies, and no adverse effects reported.
