TLDR Combining low-dose oral minoxidil and spironolactone may improve hair growth safely.
This retrospective study evaluated the efficacy and safety of low-dose oral minoxidil (LDOM) and spironolactone combination therapy for female androgenetic alopecia (AGA) in 21 patients at NYU Langone Health. The study found a trend toward increased hair density with combination therapy compared to monotherapy, although the difference was not statistically significant. Side effects were minimal, with only 1 patient experiencing dizziness, which resolved without medication changes. The study suggests that combination therapy may offer improved outcomes while maintaining safety, but acknowledges limitations such as small sample size and lack of blood pressure measurements. Further research is needed to fully understand the benefits and risks of this treatment approach.
