TLDR The herbal supplement increased hair thickness and reduced scalp oiliness in women.
In a 24-week study conducted 6 years ago, 26 Korean women aged 26-55 with androgenic alopecia were given a supplement of Black Bean, Licorice, and Biotae Folium. The results showed a significant increase in hair diameter and a decrease in sebum secretion, but no significant effect on hair density. The supplement was deemed likely effective in improving hair and scalp conditions, but the researchers suggested further studies with larger participant numbers and varied herb combinations and dosages to better understand the effects. No safety issues were reported.

Scalp biopsies are crucial for diagnosing hair loss conditions like Diffuse Unpatterned Alopecia (DUPA) and retrograde hair loss, as treatments like finasteride and dutasteride may not be effective if other conditions are present. Combining PPAR-GAMMA agonists with retinoids could improve treatments for conditions like Lichen Planopilaris.
