TLDR Korean medicinal herbs in hair tonic and food increased hair growth in mice.
In a study conducted 13 years ago, Korean medicinal herbs-included hair tonic (MHT) and food (MF) were tested on an alopecia model of C57BL/6 mice to investigate their effects on hair growth. The mice were divided into three groups: a normal group (N), a positive control group (C), and a treatment group (T). The hair regrowth was assessed through photographs taken at 7, 14, and 21 days, and hair density and thickness were evaluated using a Folliscope. The study found that both hair density and thickness on the dorsal skin were significantly increased in the C and T groups compared to the N group after 21 days of mixed treatment. Additionally, the expressions of insulin-like growth factor (IGF-1) on the dorsal skin were higher in the C and T groups than in the N group. The results suggested that the herbal hair tonic and natural food promoted hair growth and could potentially be useful for the treatment of baldness or alopecia.
