TLDR Flutamide effectively treats female pattern hair loss long-term with low doses being safe for the liver.
The study evaluated the long-term effects, safety, and tolerability of flutamide in 101 women with female pattern hair loss (FPHL) over a 4-year period. Participants received reducing doses of flutamide, with some also taking oral contraceptives. Results showed a significant decrease in alopecia scores after 12 months, with maximum effects observed after 2 years and maintained thereafter. Androgens were strongly suppressed during treatment. Initially, 4% of participants discontinued due to hepatic disorders, but no further hepatic issues were reported with lower doses. The study concluded that flutamide was an effective long-term treatment for FPHL, with low doses ensuring hepatic tolerability and high compliance.

Hair loss treatments discussed include minoxidil, finasteride, and RU58841. Salon products and supplements generally don't work for hair regrowth unless there's a severe nutritional deficiency, while hormonal treatments like estrogen and spironolactone can be effective.

The conversation discusses the effectiveness of anti-androgens for hair loss, with a preference for topical treatments like RU58841 over oral options due to better scalp concentration and fewer side effects. Topical finasteride at 0.1% may provide some results, especially when combined with a topical androgen receptor antagonist like RU58841.
