TLDR Ageratum conyzoides may lower blood sugar and improve blood lipid levels in diabetic rats.
The study investigated the antidiabetic effect of Ageratum conyzoides, a plant used in traditional medicine, on streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats. The researchers used 40 albino Wistar rats, divided into eight groups, with groups B to H induced with diabetes. The rats were treated with different parts of the plant (flower, leaf, stem, root, and all parts) at 2000mg/kg for 28 days. The lethal dose of the plant extracts was found to be above 5000mg/kg. After treatment, significant differences were observed in the weights of the various groups. Sodium, potassium, and chloride levels reduced significantly, while white blood cell count and its indices reduced and red blood cell count and its indices increased significantly. The results suggest that Ageratum conyzoides has antihyperglycemic and antilipidemic properties at 2000mg/kg.
