TLDR Diphenylcyclopropenone is effective for treating alopecia areata but has a high relapse rate.
This study evaluated the efficacy of Diphenylcyclopropenone (DCP) in treating alopecia areata (AA), alopecia totalis (AT), and alopecia universalis (AU) in 59 Thai patients. The overall response rate was 61%, with AA showing the highest response (78.6%) and AU the lowest (50%). The median response time was 58 weeks, with AU taking significantly longer than AA. Factors such as older age at onset, shorter disease duration before DCP initiation, and quicker initial hair regrowth were associated with better outcomes. The relapse rate was high at 63.9%, occurring after a median of 39 weeks. Blistering was the most common side effect (73.7%). DCP is effective and safe for extensive AA, but due to the high relapse rate, maintenance therapy is recommended.
