TLDR DPCP alone is more effective and safer for treating chronic extensive alopecia areata than combining it with anthralin.
The study aimed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of diphenylcyclopropenone (DPCP) alone versus in combination with anthralin in treating chronic extensive alopecia areata (AA). It involved 24 patients, with 12 treated only with DPCP and 12 with both DPCP and anthralin for at least 24 weeks. Results showed that 62.5% of patients treated with DPCP alone experienced complete hair regrowth, compared to 18.2% in the combination therapy group (p = .04). DPCP alone was found to be superior in terms of efficacy, onset, and completion time of hair regrowth. Additionally, the combination therapy group experienced more side effects. The authors declared no potential conflict of interest.
