TLDR The study found that most donor sites are good for hairline restoration in Southeast Asian women, but hair characteristics should match for a natural look, and aging can reduce hair density and diameter.
In the 2018 study involving 101 Southeast Asian female volunteers, researchers found that hair density at the hairline ranged from 69.82 to 135.2 hairs/cm² and hair diameter from 72.09 to 80.07 µm, while donor hair density ranged from 98.89 to 152.19 hairs/cm² with hair diameter between 76.80 to 81.11 µm. Aging was shown to affect hair density and diameter at the donor area, with a decline in both metrics at some donor sites. The study concluded that all donor sites except the neck region were suitable for midfrontal hairline restoration, and the nape was appropriate for the frontotemporal area, temple peak, and sideburns. Additionally, the average hairs per follicular unit were 1.95 in the donor area and 1.48 at the midline, with a decrease in hair density and diameter with age, especially at the temple and parietal regions. The hairline was less affected by aging than the donor area, and the study highlighted the importance of matching hair characteristics between donor and recipient sites for natural-looking hairline restoration. Further research was suggested to assess the aging effect on all scalp areas.
