The 1976 study by W Braendle et al. discussed the differentiated application of oral contraceptives based on the different side effects of synthetic progestins. The researchers proposed that the varying side effects of synthetic progestins used in oral contraceptives could be leveraged to avoid undesired side effects and emphasize desired ones. They suggested that women with virilization phenomena such as acne and seborrhea oleosa could benefit from oral contraceptives with antiandrogenic side effects, specifically those containing antiandrogens like cyproterone acetate. They recommended against treating these women with gestagens having androgenic side effects, such as nortestosterone derivatives. For women suffering from severe acne, androgenic alopecia, or idiopathic hirsutism, the researchers suggested treatment with higher doses of antiandrogens.
