The Development and Evaluation of an Ovulation Inhibitor (Diane) Containing an Antiandrogen

    U Lachnit-Fixson
TLDR Diane® is an effective contraceptive that also helps treat acne and mild hair growth issues.
The study evaluated Diane®, a combination of 2 mg cyproterone acetate (an antiandrogen) and 0.05 mg ethinyl estradiol, through extensive clinical trials. Diane® was found to be an effective contraceptive and a potent treatment for acne, seborrhea, and mild hirsutism. However, its impact on significantly increased hair growth was less pronounced. The paper also discussed the potential mechanisms of action of antiandrogens alone and in combination with estrogen.

Spironolactone is more potent and lowers testosterone and DHT, while dutasteride only impacts DHT. For female hair loss, checking hormones and considering treatments like oral minoxidil, spironolactone, or topical minoxidil is recommended.

Scalp biopsies are crucial for diagnosing hair loss conditions like Diffuse Unpatterned Alopecia (DUPA) and retrograde hair loss, as treatments like finasteride and dutasteride may not be effective if other conditions are present. Combining PPAR-GAMMA agonists with retinoids could improve treatments for conditions like Lichen Planopilaris.
