TLDR Transplanted hair follicles can restore function and connect with host tissues.
The study discussed the autologous transplantation of hair follicles as a treatment for androgenetic alopecia, highlighting the importance of interactions between multiple stem cell populations and surrounding cutaneous tissues for hair follicle function and skin homeostasis. Researchers successfully established a mouse model for single follicular transplantation, demonstrating that transplanted hair follicles could autonomously restore piloerection and form proper connections with host tissues, including the arrector pili muscle and nerve fibers. The study showed that the piloerection ability of transplanted follicles could be quantitatively estimated, contributing to the development of functional regeneration therapies for skin and its appendages.
