TLDR Antioxidant-rich maize varieties can improve health and need local support for widespread farming.
The document discussed the development of antioxidant maize varieties rich in beta carotene, which were beneficial for health by preventing conditions such as early blindness, hair loss, and malnutrition in young children. The Ministry of Agriculture released three varieties: two open-pollinated (Provit A1 and Provit A2) and one hybrid (Bima Provit A1), with beta carotene levels 155.3-236.6% higher than regular corn. The yield potential was 7.36 t/ha for open-pollinated and 9.85 t/ha for hybrid types. Cultivation methods were similar to regular corn, but required specific isolation measures to prevent cross-pollination with ordinary corn, which could reduce antioxidant levels. The document emphasized the need for local government support in Eastern Indonesia to promote adoption by farmers.
