TLDR Gelidium corneum seaweed has promising skin health benefits, including UV protection and healing properties.
The study investigates the dermocosmetic potential of the red seaweed Gelidium corneum, emphasizing its antioxidant, photoprotective, and healing properties. Various fractions of the seaweed were tested, with the most lipophilic fraction providing photoprotection and the aqueous fraction demonstrating healing capabilities. Emulsions containing 1% and 10% seaweed extract showed promising antioxidant and water retention properties in in vivo tests on 10 healthy volunteers. The seaweed's fractions, rich in phenolic compounds, exhibited significant antioxidant activity, non-cytotoxicity, and photoprotective effects, promoting wound healing and showing low inflammatory effects. The findings suggest that Gelidium corneum could be a valuable source of bioactive ingredients for sustainable cosmetic formulations, though further research is needed to understand its long-term effects and mechanisms against UV damage.
