Degradation of Human Hair Keratin Scaffold Material Used to Repair Injured Skeletal Muscles of Rabbits

TLDR Human hair keratin scaffold material degrades in muscles mainly through the ubiquitin system with lysosome help.
The study investigated the degradation mechanism of human hair keratin (HHK) scaffold material in injured skeletal muscles of six New Zealand rabbits. The HHK material, with varying degradation speeds, was implanted in the rabbits and observed over 1, 3, and 6 weeks. Results showed that the HHK material degraded into particles, which were phagocytosed by macrophagocytes and multinucleate giant cells. The degradation process involved the ubiquitin system, with enzymatic histochemistry indicating positive results for these cells at the first week. By the sixth week, further degradation of the HHK material was observed. The study concluded that the HHK scaffold material was primarily degraded through the ubiquitin system, with lysosomes aiding in the breakdown of the resultant particles.

      community Keratin microspheres - breakthrough

      in Research/Science  13 upvotes 1 year ago
A gel of keratin microspheres promotes hair follicle growth, showing similar effectiveness to minoxidil in mice. The treatment activates hair growth pathways and reduces inflammation, with potential applications in drug delivery for hair-related disorders.

Keratin microspheres may offer additional mechanisms to combat hair loss compared to minoxidil. The process to create these microspheres is relatively simple and can be done at home with basic equipment.

Procapil is marketed as a natural hair loss treatment but lacks strong evidence and is industry-biased. Minoxidil and Finasteride are the only FDA-approved treatments for androgenetic alopecia.
