TLDR Topical immunotherapy is more effective than dapsone for treating severe alopecia areata.
In a study involving 27 patients with severe alopecia areata, dapsone treatment over an average of 10 months was found to be significantly less effective than long-term topical immunotherapy. The rate of hair regrowth in patients treated with dapsone was similar to the rate of spontaneous hair regrowth documented in existing literature.
