TLDR Over half of the diabetes patients had skin issues, with fungal infections being most common.
The study involving 200 patients with diabetes mellitus revealed that 53.5% experienced cutaneous infections, with fungal infections being the most common at 32.5%, followed by bacterial infections at 21%. Other skin conditions found were acanthosis nigricans (10.5%), generalized pruritus (10.5%), and skin tags (9.5%). The research highlighted that skin manifestations are frequent in individuals with diabetes and can serve as an early indicator of the condition, sometimes appearing before other symptoms. The importance of skin examinations in the diagnosis of diabetes was underscored, given that cutaneous signs may manifest concurrently with or prior to the onset of systemic disease. The study was ethically approved and reported no conflicts of interest or funding sources.
