TLDR More skin lesions in lupus patients may indicate higher disease activity.
This study investigates the relationship between cutaneous lupus erythematosus (CLE) and systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) activity. Conducted at the San Martín General Acute Interzonal Hospital, it involved 93 consultations, predominantly women, with SLE and/or CLE. The findings indicate that patients with both specific and nonspecific skin lesions, or those with three or more types of skin lesions, show increased systemic disease activity, particularly at a moderate severity level. These manifestations are linked to alopecia, hypocomplementemia, anti-dsDNA, and oral ulcers, but not to organ involvement. The study suggests the need for larger prospective studies to further explore these associations.
