Construction of the Hairline in Punch Transplanting

In the 1985 paper by Walter P. Unger, M.D., techniques for creating a natural-looking hairline in punch transplanting for hair restoration were discussed. The paper highlighted the importance of an irregular hairline, V-shaped temple recessions, and correct hair growth direction. It recommended using grafts from the lower occipital area and avoiding grafts with more than 14 to 16 hairs in the front to prevent an unnatural density. The standard graft size for the first session was 4 mm, with larger grafts used in later sessions. The author emphasized the need for a snug fit between donor grafts and recipient holes, which should be 1 to 0.75 mm smaller. The paper also discussed the importance of graft placement, spacing, and angling, as well as the use of "blender" grafts and "MMunigrafts" for a natural and dense hairline. The process was described as meticulous but capable of producing satisfying results.
