TLDR Two Australian Poll Hereford calves had severe anaemia, abnormal red blood cells, and skin issues.
The document reported on two Poll Hereford calves from South Australia exhibiting congenital dyserythropoietic anaemia (CDA) with dyskeratosis and progressive alopecia, a syndrome previously noted in Canada and the USA. The calves showed severe anaemia with abnormal nucleated red blood cells in peripheral blood and numerous rubricytes and metarubricytes with distinctive nuclear ultrastructure in the bone marrow. They were born with wiry hair coats and developed a progressively 'dirty-faced' appearance due to hyperkeratosis and dyskeratosis (apoptosis).
