TLDR N-acetyl cysteine and metformin both improved fertility in women with PCOS equally, but N-acetyl cysteine had fewer side effects.
The study conducted 5 years ago compared the effects of N-acetyl cysteine (NAC) and metformin on 60 anovulatory infertile women with Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). The results showed that both treatments led to significant improvements in menstrual pattern, ovulation, and a decrease in BMI (25.36±2.15 kg/m2 to 24.34±2.14 kg/m2). The efficacy of the two drugs was found to be equal. However, NAC was associated with significantly fewer side effects than metformin, suggesting that while both treatments are effective, NAC may be better tolerated.
