TLDR Women with PCOS have altered brain structure and reduced cognitive performance.
The study investigated the impact of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) on brain structure and cognitive function in young women. It involved 18 women with PCOS and 18 matched controls. The findings indicated that women with PCOS exhibited a widespread reduction in axial diffusivity and increased tissue volume fraction in the corpus callosum, suggesting altered white matter microstructure. Additionally, cognitive performance was reduced in the PCOS group compared to controls, despite similar education and intelligence levels. The study also found a reversal in the relationship between brain microstructure and both androgens and insulin resistance in women with PCOS compared to controls.
