TLDR Clove essential oil nanoemulgel effectively reduces skin inflammation and is a promising alternative to traditional anti-inflammatory drugs.
The study investigated the development of clove essential oil (CEO) in nanoemulgel (NEG) and nanofiber (NFs) formulations to enhance its anti-inflammatory effects as cyclooxygenase-2 inhibitors for external inflammation. Using Taguchi’s model, the CEO-NE-based NEG was optimized for improved skin adhesion, drug release control, and stability, while CEO-NE-based NFs were prepared via electrospinning. In vivo tests on mice demonstrated that CEO-NE-based NEG significantly reduced inflammation in a croton oil-induced skin inflammation model, showing superior skin permeation and anti-inflammatory effects compared to CEO-NE-based NFs and pure CEO. The formulations were stable under refrigerated conditions and well-tolerated in skin irritation tests, suggesting their potential as effective and safe alternatives to traditional NSAIDs for treating inflammatory disorders.
