Clinical and Histologic Features of 64 Cases of Steatocystoma Multiplex

The study evaluated 64 patients with Steatocystoma multiplex (SM), focusing on clinical and histopathological features. Most cases were sporadic, with an average onset age of 26 years, and lesions commonly appeared on the arms, chest, axillae, and neck. All cases showed an eosinophilic cuticle and absence of a granular layer, while 17-42% exhibited vellus hair, hair follicles, keratin, and smooth muscle components within or near the cysts. The findings supported the hypothesis that SM is a hamartomatous condition and suggested that SM and eruptive vellus hair cyst (EVHC) are variants of a single disorder originating in the pilosebaceous duct.
