TLDR Most children with childhood-onset lupus in Baghdad responded well to treatment, but some developed chronic kidney disease or died.
This study retrospectively analyzed 50 children with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and lupus nephritis (LN) in Baghdad from 2009 to 2011. The median age was 11 years, with a female to male ratio of 5:3. Common symptoms included weight loss (92%), fever (90%), edema (88%), arthritis (70%), hair loss (70%), and malar rash (60%). Pathological findings showed LN class IV as the most common (74%). Treatment outcomes varied: all patients in classes I-III achieved full remission with prednisolone, while 24 out of 31 patients in classes IV-V achieved remission with cyclophosphamide, mycophenolate mofetil, or azathioprine. However, four patients developed chronic kidney disease, and three died.
