TLDR Most children with childhood-onset lupus in Baghdad responded well to treatment, but some developed chronic kidney disease or died.
The study retrospectively analyzed 50 children with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) in Baghdad, focusing on clinical characteristics, pathological findings, and treatment responses. The median age was 11 years, with a female to male ratio of 5:3. Common symptoms included weight loss (92%), fever (90%), and hair loss (70%). Pathological findings showed that 74% had class IV lupus nephritis (LN). Treatment with prednisolone led to full remission in classes I-III. For classes IV and V, cyclophosphamide, mycophenolate mofetil, and azathioprine were used, resulting in remission for most patients, though some developed chronic kidney disease or died. The study concluded that diffuse proliferative glomerulonephritis (class IV) was the most common LN pattern.
