Azathioprine, also known by brand names such as Imuran, is an immunosuppressive medication commonly used to prevent organ rejection in transplant patients and to treat autoimmune conditions like rheumatoid arthritis and certain types of alopecia. It works by inhibiting the proliferation of immune cells, thereby reducing the immune system's activity and preventing it from attacking the body's own tissues.
