TLDR Continuous use of hair relaxers and curlers can cause hair loss, dryness, dandruff, thinning, greying, and split ends.
The study conducted by Smriti Vyas, Kalpana Gupta, Parth Modi, and Ankit Bhadee in 2018 examined the effects of repeated chemical relaxing and curling on hair health. The cross-sectional observational hospital-based study involved 47 patients, aged between 18 to 50 years, who had undergone relaxing and curling more than once over a period of 12 months. The results showed that 61% of the patients experienced hair loss, 45% had dry hair, 20% developed dandruff, 30% reported thinning of hair, 25% noticed greying of hair, and 15% had split ends. The study concluded that continuous use of hair relaxers and curlers led to adverse effects such as hair fall, lack of hair growth, hair breakage, hair thinning, and scalp irritation.
