TLDR Hair mineral content can non-invasively monitor yak health and nutrition.
The study on 81 Tianzhu white yaks examined the correlation between hormones, immunoglobulins, and minerals in blood serum and hair across different ages and genders. It found that younger yaks (1–2 years) had higher levels of melatonin and dihydrotestosterone, important for hair growth, and higher IgA levels, while IgG and IgM levels decreased with age. Mineral concentrations like calcium, magnesium, zinc, and iron were higher in younger and older yaks compared to middle-aged ones. Positive correlations between these elements suggest they collectively regulate hair growth and immune function. The study concludes that hair mineral content analysis can serve as a non-invasive method to monitor yak health and nutrition.
