TLDR Real-time PCR quickly and accurately detects ringworm in dogs.
This case report demonstrates the effectiveness of SYBR-Green real-time PCR in rapidly diagnosing canine ringworm caused by Trichophyton mentagrophytes, compared to traditional methods. An 8-year-old dog with generalized alopecia was initially treated with prednisone and cephalexin without success. Real-time PCR confirmed the presence of T. mentagrophytes, and the dog was successfully treated with itraconazole and miconazole-chlorhexidine shampoo. The study highlights the potential of real-time PCR for faster, more specific diagnosis of dermatophytosis in dogs, facilitating timely treatment and reducing zoonotic transmission risk.
