TLDR qPCR is effective for quickly diagnosing fungal infections in horses.
The study reports a case of equine dermatophytosis caused by Nannizzia gypsea (Microsporum gypseum) in a 2-year-old horse, diagnosed using SYBR-Green real-time PCR. The horse presented with circular areas of alopecia and lesions on the head and neck. Traditional diagnostic methods, such as microscopic examination, were negative, but the culture was positive for Nannizzia gypsea. The study highlights the effectiveness of qPCR in providing a specific and rapid diagnosis of dermatophyte infections, which are common in animals and can affect humans, especially in warm, humid conditions. This method allows for the early detection of dermatophytes, which is crucial for managing infections in veterinary medicine.
