TLDR Soaking calf skin in lime solution dissolves cells at different rates, with optimal dehairing after 4-7 days.
The study investigated the effects of soaking calf skin in a lime solution, revealing that cellular elements dissolve at different rates, with sweat gland and erector pili muscle cells dissolving first, followed by epidermis and hair follicle cells. Keratin in the epidermis dissolves, causing layers to separate and form a membrane-like plate. Collagen fibers swell and separate over time, while elastin fibers show minimal change. Sebaceous gland cells undergo minor changes, and hair medulla remains largely unchanged, though surrounding cells dissolve, isolating hairs. Optimal dehairing occurs after 4-7 days of soaking at -18°C, primarily due to tissue collapse.
