Assessment of the Therapeutic Efficacy of Botulinum Toxin in Male Androgenetic Alopecia
December 2024
TLDR Botulinum toxin injections do not help with male pattern baldness.
This study assessed the efficacy of botulinum toxin (TB) in treating male androgenetic alopecia (AAG) in a triple-blind, randomized trial involving 13 men aged 18 to 45. Participants received TB injections on one side of the scalp and saline on the other, with evaluations at 0, 12, and 24 weeks. Despite the hypothesis that TB could increase blood flow and reduce factors contributing to hair miniaturization, the study found no significant hair growth or improvement in hair density. Both the TB and placebo sides showed decreased hair density and an increased vellus/terminal hair ratio. The study concluded that TB injections do not benefit men with AAG.
