TLDR Botulinum toxin A helped a patient recover from dissecting folliculitis when antibiotics failed.
A patient with dissecting folliculitis, unresponsive to antibiotic therapy, underwent four monthly sessions of intradermal administration of 100 units of botulinum toxin A. Four months post-treatment, the patient experienced complete recovery of the affected scalp area. A biopsy revealed the presence of Staphylococcus lugdunensis and Staphylococcus aureus, both resistant to erythromycin. The study found that the toxin did not affect the viability or biofilm production of the Staphylococcus strains, suggesting that the therapeutic effect of the toxin was linked solely to the host's response.
