TLDR Using body hair with scalp hair for hair transplants improves density and coverage in severe hair loss cases.
The study conducted by Anil Kumar Garg and Seema Garg in 2018 involved 16 patients and aimed to demonstrate the use of body hair in increasing the visual density and coverage for higher grades of androgenetic alopecia (AA). The researchers used beard, chest, and abdominal follicles in combination with scalp hair follicles to treat Norwood grade IV and above hair loss. The follicles were harvested using the follicular unit excision (FUE) technique. The results, assessed through global photography at 4, 8, and 12 months post-operation, showed that the use of body hair combined with scalp hair greatly enhanced the visual density and coverage in even higher grades of hair loss. The study concluded that "combination grafting" is an effective method to treat higher grades of hair loss and to enhance the results of hair transplantation in suitable patients.
