TLDR Higher inflammation markers are linked to more severe alopecia areata.
This study involving 302 alopecia areata (AA) patients and 296 healthy controls found that systemic inflammation biomarkers, specifically neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio (NLR), systemic immune inflammation index (SII), and white blood cell/lymphocyte ratio (WLR), were significantly higher in AA patients. Furthermore, platelet/lymphocyte ratio (PLR) and SII were notably elevated in patients with severe AA compared to those with mild-to-moderate AA. The findings suggest that elevated levels of these biomarkers are associated with an increased risk of severe AA, indicating a strong link between systemic inflammation and the severity of the disease.
