This study investigated the effects of bimatoprost on rabbit eyelash follicles, using 15 healthy male rabbits. Daily application of bimatoprost 0.03% for 1 month significantly increased eyelash length and thickness. Histological analysis showed a thicker epidermis, more hair shafts per follicle, and a higher anagen/telogen ratio in treated eyes. Electron microscopy revealed enhanced keratinization and increased melanin granules, indicating active cellular proliferation and differentiation. The study concluded that bimatoprost stimulates the transition from telogen to anagen phase, potentially benefiting individuals with weak eyelashes. Further research was suggested to explore the duration of these effects and potential applications in conditions like madarosis.
