TLDR Bicalutamide added no extra benefit over minoxidil alone for female-pattern hair loss.
In a randomized, double-blind clinical trial with 74 women, the combination of 25 mg bicalutamide and 1 mg minoxidil was compared to 1 mg minoxidil alone for treating female-pattern hair loss over 24 weeks. The study found no significant difference in hair density improvement between the groups, with mean increases of 18.1 hairs/cm² for the combination group and 21.5 hairs/cm² for the minoxidil-only group. However, the combination group experienced a more pronounced reduction in hair shedding and a lower incidence of transient hair shedding. Adverse events were similar, but facial hypertrichosis was more common in the minoxidil-only group. The study concluded that bicalutamide did not provide additional benefits over minoxidil alone, indicating a need for longer-term studies.
