TLDR β-Sitosterol may help prevent heart disease, cancer, and diabetes, but more human studies are needed.
β-Sitosterol, a prevalent phytosterol found in nuts, seeds, and vegetable oils, is known for lowering the absorption of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol. It has shown potential in preventing heart diseases, cancer, and diabetes through various in vitro and in vivo studies. However, there is a lack of clinical studies to confirm its safety and effectiveness in humans. This review highlights the dietary sources of β-sitosterol, its role in disease prevention, and the mechanisms involved, while also addressing existing research gaps and suggesting future research directions to establish β-sitosterol as a nutraceutical candidate.
