Anti-Melanogenic And Anti-Oxidative Effects Of Nostoc Verrucosum Extracts

The study explored the anti-melanogenic and anti-oxidative properties of Nostoc verrucosum extracts, finding that methanol and hexane extracts significantly inhibited melanin synthesis in B16F1 melanoma cells. The hexane extract was particularly effective, suppressing tyrosinase activity and melanin-related gene expression, while also inhibiting MC1R and MMP-1 mRNA expression, indicating potential in preventing cancer metastasis. Although the extracts showed antioxidant activity, this did not significantly contribute to their antimelanogenic effects. These results suggest that Nostoc verrucosum could be a promising candidate for developing antimelanogenic agents, cosmetics, or functional food ingredients, though further research is needed.
