TLDR ATG effectively reduces hair frizz without damaging hair strength.
This study explores methods to reduce hair flyaways and frizz by inducing changes in the α-helical structure of hair proteins using reducing agents like ATG, L-cysteine, and sodium sulfite. The treatments effectively decrease frizz by increasing random coil ratios, with ATG being the most effective at a concentration of 0.3%. The study confirms that these treatments do not compromise hair tensile strength, indicating their safety. The research involved hair samples from three individuals and used techniques such as Raman spectroscopy and DSC to analyze structural changes. A shampoo with 0.5% ATG showed significant improvements in hair properties after 56 applications, providing a foundation for developing effective hair care products.
