The study investigated the antioxidant and anti-aging effects of Grateloupia elata extract, a red alga from South Korea. The extract demonstrated significant antioxidant activity and contained high levels of polyphenols and flavonoids. It inhibited collagenase and elastase activity by 57.87% and 38.46%, respectively, and increased procollagen content in fibroblast cultures more effectively than ascorbic acid. Additionally, it reduced the secretion and mRNA expression of matrix metalloproteinases-1 (MMP-1) more effectively than ascorbic acid. These findings suggest that G. elata extract could be a promising ingredient for anti-aging cosmetics.
