TLDR Liquorice extract may help treat acne by reducing sebum production.
The study investigated the anti-acne potential of lipido-sterolic extract of Serenoa repens and hydro-alcoholic extract of Glycyrrhiza glabra using a Syrian hamster ear model. Acne vulgaris, a common dermatological condition, is influenced by androgens that increase sebum production. The research focused on reducing sebum production as a treatment strategy. The study found that topical application of a 3% w/v hydroalcoholic extract of liquorice roots significantly reduced the area of sebaceous glands in the hamster model. These results suggested that liquorice could be a promising natural treatment for acne due to its antiandrogenic properties.
