TLDR Anorexia nervosa can harm fertility and increase pregnancy risks.
The review examined the impact of anorexia nervosa (AN) on female reproductive health, focusing on disruptions in the hypothalamic-pituitary-ovarian axis leading to amenorrhea and reduced fertility. A study involving 841 women found that 10% of those with AN experienced primary amenorrhea. AN patients had lower fertility rates, with only 25% becoming mothers, and often required fertility treatments. While pregnancy outcomes could include higher risks of complications, some studies suggested outcomes similar to healthy individuals. The review emphasized the need for improved clinical management of reproductive issues in AN patients and called for further research into the underlying pathophysiological mechanisms. It also highlighted the role of neuropeptides and neurotransmitters in reproductive function, noting limited clinical trials in this area but anticipating future insights.
