TLDR Women with hair loss have higher androgen levels, while men with early balding have altered androgen ratios.
The study assessed androgen metabolite levels in women with androgenic alopecia and men with premature balding, involving 10 normal ovulatory female controls, 50 hyperandrogenic women, 10 normal men, and 10 young men with premature balding. Hyperandrogenic women had elevated androgen metabolites compared to controls, while men with premature balding had lower levels of 3α-androstanediol glucuronide and altered androgen conjugate ratios. The findings indicated enhanced 5α-reductase activity and a disorder of androgen conjugation favoring sulfurylation over glucuronidation as features of scalp hair loss.
