TLDR Omega-3 fatty acids improve heart health, reduce inflammation, help joint and muscle conditions, and can improve skin disorders.
This article reviews the therapeutic benefits of Omega-3 fatty acids in various health contexts. It highlights that a higher intake of Omega-3 is associated with improved cardiovascular health by affecting metabolic and signaling pathways, while Omega-6 can reduce coronary heart disease risk. Omega-3s also exhibit anti-inflammatory effects by downregulating immune cell activation and regulating immunological functions, which can help reduce inflammation and graft rejection. In joint health, Omega-3 consumption is linked to benefits in conditions like Rheumatoid Arthritis and Osteoarthritis, with the Omega-6:Omega-3 ratio being important for treatment outcomes. Additionally, Omega-3 fatty acids are beneficial for muscle health in Rheumatoid Arthritis patients. For skin disorders, fish oils rich in Omega-3 PUFAs can improve inflammatory conditions and ameliorate the severity of disorders such as psoriasis, photoaging, skin cancer, and dermatitis. The article also notes that a deficiency in Omega-3 can lead to skin issues like erythema, scaling, hair loss, and increased water loss.
