TLDR Combining α1-blockers with 5α-reductase inhibitors improves urinary symptoms in men.
The document reviewed evidence suggesting that adding α1-blockers to 5α-reductase inhibitors improved lower urinary tract symptoms in men. The combination therapy was found to be more effective than using 5α-reductase inhibitors alone. This conclusion was based on a systematic review of studies, including the CombAT study, which showed that the combination of dutasteride and tamsulosin led to better clinical outcomes for men with symptomatic benign prostatic hyperplasia over a 4-year period. However, it was also noted that 5α-reductase inhibitors might increase the risk of a more serious form of prostate cancer, as indicated by an FDA Drug Safety Communication.
